colour drenching

Everything you need to know about colour drenching

Colour drenching, the practice of bathing every surface in a single uniform colour is gaining a whole lot of momentum at the moment. This bold yet surprisingly simple technique has the power to elevate any room, making it feel more spacious, serene, and right on trend. But don’t be fooled, colour drenching is not just about slapping on a coat of paint; it’s an art form that requires careful consideration. By eliminating visual noise and creating a sense of continuity, this technique can make even the smallest spaces feel airy and expansive.

The colour drench design approach has its roots in the Impressionist era when artists like Claude Monet experimented with bold, unifying colours. Fast-forward to today, and it’s experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Designers and homeowners alike are embracing it, and the results are ten out of ten.

So, why should you consider colour drenching for your next design project? For starters, it creates the illusion of space by erasing visual boundaries, colour drenching makes rooms feel larger and more open. It also hides imperfections – that unsightly air conditioning vent or uneven surface? Making them all but disappear.

Ready to give this technique a try? Here’s how to make it work.

Colour Drenching Product Tile Homemaker the Valley

Adairs Nouveau Rug $549.99, Casa Blanco Roma Console $4,400, Casa Blanco Triah Chair $780, DecoRug Crescent Framed Canvas Wall art $84.96, Domayne Spots Olive Large Vase $109, Early Settler Finch 3 Seater Sofa $1,699, Early Settler Vaani Round Side Table $249, Freedom Cosh Table Lamp $69.95, James Lane Olive Tree $349.95, OZ Design Bella Feather Fill Cushion $89.95, Provincial Home Living Lucerne Compote $169.95, Provincial Home Living Talia Basket $69.95.

Step 1: Choose your canvas

First up, you’ll need to consider where you’d like to apply this trend. Although you can incorporate it in any space, colour drenching works best in bathrooms, hallways, and stairways – anywhere you want to create a sense of flow. You’ll notice that many luxe hotels and hospitality hot spots often opt for a single-hued bathroom featuring monochromatic terracotta colour tiles or sage green.

Step 2: Select your shade

Be sure to consider the room’s purpose and the furniture you’ll be using before selecting your colour. Rich, bold colours can add depth and luxury, while softer hues create a sense of calm. If your goal is to make the space appear larger then steer clear from dark hues. It’s wise to think about the furnishing to be used in the room also. If you have a stunning navy armchair, this same hue or something a touch darker or lighter would be ideal for the paintable surfaces.

Step 3: Paint with purpose

Don’t be shy when it comes to painting – coat every surface, from ceiling to skirting boards. This step is a non-negotiable when it comes to colour drenching every surface must be painted with the same colour to create a seamless look.

Step 4: Add subtle pops of personality

When it comes to colour drenching, your décor plays a vital role in enhancing the overall effect. To add depth and visual interest, incorporate smaller pieces that break up the space while complementing the dominant colour. For instance, if you’ve chosen pink as your primary colour, select an artwork that features pink prominently but also includes a splash of orange. You can then subtly introduce more orange through flowers or a vase, creating a cohesive and harmonious look. By thoughtfully incorporating artwork, flowers, or vases, you can add layers of visual interest and break up the space, preventing the colour from feeling overwhelming. Once you’ve finalised your furnishings and décor options, your colour drench space is complete.

Ready to try colour drenching for yourself?

There you have it, colour drenching is more than just a fleeting design trend – it’s a game-changer that can elevate any space. By embracing a single hue, you can create a harmonious, visually appealing space that leaves a lasting impression on all who enter. So why not try it out for yourself? Introduce this innovative technique to your home and discover chromatic bliss!

coffee table styling

The coffee table edit

The coffee table – it’s the central hub of our lounging, snacking, and Netflix-binging habits, and yet, it’s often the most neglected when it comes to styling. But no more! We’ve created the ultimate guide to coffee table styling, meaning your living room will never be the same. From the rule of three to making a vignette that’s both stylish and functional, we’re sharing our top tips and tricks to help you take your coffee table game to the next level. The best part? You can create a Pinterest-worthy coffee table with pieces found under just one roof – Homemaker The Valley, of course!

Find your table

Before moving into the nitty-gritty of styling, be sure to begin with the foundation – the table itself. Whether you’re after a sleek glass surface or a rustic wooden slab, your coffee table is the canvas for your styling, so be sure to consider shape, size, and style. Round coffee tables are great for smaller spaces whereas rectangular shapes are best for larger spaces. When deciding on size, it’s recommended that your coffee table should be two-thirds the length of the adjacent sofa.

Rule of threes and placement

Now that you have your table sorted, let’s move on to the golden rule of styling; the rule of threes. This is a design concept that’s all about grouping objects in odd numbers to appear more visually appealing. When grouping three items together we recommend arranging your object to form a triangle, with the tallest item at the apex. This kind of formation will create an equilibrium and make the coffee table super balanced.

coffee table styling; magazine, vase, candle

Adairs Sorrento Candle $44.99, Domayne Pence Round Tray Set of 2 $169, Freedom Living Outside Decorative Book $69.95, Freedom Slim Aarons Women By Brumby Sunstate $119, James Lane Bon Coffee Table $1,299, OZ Design Staghorn Fern Pot $149, Provincial Home Living Tulum Decorative Urn $119.95.

Book stacks are a must

Books are one of the best coffee table accessories – they add height, texture, and a dash of entertainment. But don’t just throw any old book on the table. Consider colour coordination, size variation, and title selection. You’ll want the books selected to reflect your interior style as well as personality, so opt for ones that appeal to your interests whether that be fashion, cooking, or lifestyle.

Think about height

Take your styling to new heights (literally) by adding various heights to your table arrangement. You can do this by stacking objects like books and boxes, incorporating pedestals and risers to elevate smaller items, and adding greenery like flowers in large vases.

With these coffee table styling tips and tricks, you’re ready to transform your coffee table into the centrepiece of your living room. So go ahead, get creative and make your space a true showstopper. For all your homeware needs and inspiration, head to Homemaker The Valley – your one-stop destination for making your house a home.

feng shui bedroom ideas

How to design a feng shui bedroom

Want to turn your bedroom into a calming space where you can rest and reset every day? You’re in luck! Our top feng shui bedroom ideas will help create a space that’s as beautiful as it is peaceful.

But first, let’s get back to basics: what even is feng shui? In a nutshell, it’s an ancient Chinese philosophy to do with harnessing the power of energy (or “chi”) to create a space that feels super balanced. The word ‘feng’ means wind and ‘shui’ means water – so, together, these symbolise the way of wind and water (aka the flow of life).

Ever since the 1970s, feng shui has evolved in Western culture and has become a thoughtful approach to designing spaces through balancing furniture, décor, and layout to maximise the flow of good vibes (and minimise the bad).

We bet you’re wondering how exactly to design a feng shui bedroom. Simply read on and follow our eight essential feng shui design tips. Let’s get started!

feng shui bedroom furniture and decor ideas

Adairs Belgian Vintage Cushion $109.99, Adairs Sorrento Retreat Candle $44.99, Early Settler Cochin Hand Stitched Tassel Rug $99, Freedom Elora Framed Artwork $79.95, Freedom Palm Beach Collection Aromatherapy Diffuser $99.95, James Lane Lola Bedside Table $399, James Lane Seseh Table Lamp $99.95, Oz Design Willow Collection Queen Bed $3,199.

Tip 1: Choose the right bed and placement

According to the feng shui principles, your bed influences wealth, health, and relationships. To harness its full potential, place your bed at the farthest point from the door, facing south, without directly facing any doors. Ensure your bed is at a comfortable height, allowing energy to flow freely underneath. This placement will promote restful sleep, vitality, and a deeper connection with yourself and your space.

Tip 2: Invest in a supportive headboard

In feng shui, a headboard represents stability, security, and support in your life. Be sure to choose a solid headboard with a smooth, perforation-free design. Opt for soft, rounded edges to promote energy flow and ensure it’s securely attached to provide a further sense of safety and comfort.

Tip 3: Buy a bedside rug

Use a bedside rug to absorb energy and create a cosy atmosphere. Place one on each side of the bed if two people share the same room.

Tip 4: Opt for a neutral colour palette

Create a peaceful ambience with a neutral colour scheme. Feng shui experts recommend warm earth tones like cream, peach, and tan, plus calming blues and greys. Be sure to avoid bright colours for a more calming atmosphere.

Tip 5: Focus on balance and symmetry

Use identical bedside tables and lamps to create symmetry and balance. Ensure you leave equal space on both sides of the bed so that the room remains aligned and even.

Tip 6: Incorporate soothing scents

Scented candles enhance the senses and create a warm, healing atmosphere. They also clear energy and uplift the bedroom’s feng shui. Be sure to regularly cleanse your bedroom with sage or sweet orange oil for a refreshing boost.

Tip 7: Minimise electronics

Remove any technology such as a television or computer as they give off a lot of unwanted energy. Instead, the bedroom should be a distraction-free zone for relaxation and contemplation.

Tip 8: Be mindful of mirror placement

Avoid bedroom mirrors, as they reflect and bounce energy, causing restlessness. If a mirror is an essential, consider placing it behind a closet door instead.

And there you have it! By incorporating these simple yet powerful design tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a space filled with good energy. Ready for more? Check out our latest seasonal trend report, featuring centre stylist Eliza Graces’ perspective on feng shui.

Winter table decor: how to create the perfect Sunday roast experience

As the chill of winter settles in and we retreat inside, it creates the perfect opportunity to gather your family or friends to enjoy a cosy Sunday roast. Picture this, the living room is filled with lively conversation and the table is set and waiting while the aromas of a home-cooked roast waft from the kitchen. Sounds enticing right?

With a few simple tips and tricks, you can enjoy all the deliciousness of this beloved tradition with minimal stress and effort. We’ll guide you through setting your winter table decor, preparing hearty recipes and creating a sense of occasion for the whole family to enjoy. Everything you need awaits at Homemaker The Valley.

Setting a warm winter table with decor

There’s something to be said for setting a winter table. While summer is all about bright colour palettes and the outdoors, a winter table is defined by a warm, moody atmosphere. The best way to achieve this is to play with colours and shadows.

winter table decor

Provincial Home Living Hayman Napkin $9.95, Provincial Home Living Tilly Ribbon $14.95, Freedom NINA Candlestick Holder $14.95, Kitchen Warehouse Chasseur Rectangular Roasting Pan $219.95, Adairs Sicily Collection Pack of 2 Natural Round Placemats $24.99, Domayne Ribbed Grey/Clay15cm Taper Set of 4 Candles $14, Freedom SOHO Cutlery Set $69.95, Kitchen Warehouse Salisbury & Co Classic Gravy Boat with Saucer 325ml White $9.98, Kitchen Warehouse Ecology Ottawa Dinner Set 12pc Calico $99.95.

First up, you’ll want to choose your colour palette, think deep blues, rich burgundies or forest greens. Don’t be afraid to mix and match! From there, the key to a balanced tablescape is layering. Start with placemats as the foundation, then build upwards with dinnerware, silverware, glassware, and napery. This strategic layering adds depth and visual interest to the setting. Finally, tie it all together by adding a centrepiece. This could be a vase with seasonal flowers or a collection of candles to add an extra element of warmth and height.

With these simple steps and your own personal touch, you’ll create a winter table setting that will wow your guests and turn any meal into a special occasion. Now that the table’s set, it’s time to plan the menu!

Preparing hearty recipes

We can all relate to the stress of hosting, especially when it comes to balancing cooking duties with entertaining guests. That’s where the beauty of a Sunday roast lies. By minimising the time spent in the kitchen, you can focus on enjoying the company of your loved ones without compromising on flavour.

Start by choosing a quality cut of meat and season generously with your favourite herbs and spices. While that’s in the oven, cut up your vegetables like carrots, onion and potatoes and place in the oven alongside the meat. While they’re cooking you can mingle with your guests, and before you know it, it will be time to serve up! Of course, no hearty meal is complete without a sweet treat to round off the evening. Indulge in the comforting flavours of the season with decadent desserts like a warm fruit crumble or a rich pudding. The best part? These desserts can be prepared ahead of time and left to cook while you enjoy your roast.

Create a sense of occasion

Transforming an ordinary dinner into a memorable occasion is easier than you think, and it’s all in the small details that make the difference.

Add a touch of personalisation to your winter table decor with handwritten place cards, or sprigs of greenery tied with ribbon to each place setting. Not only does this thoughtful gesture add a touch of practicality to the table setting, but it also makes each guest feel appreciated. Another effortless but effective way of creating a sense of occasion is by structuring the meal itself. This might mean pre-dinner drinks and nibbles, setting the stage for lively conversation, followed by the main course – a hearty roast and finished off with a dessert to savour the conclusion of the evening.

By paying attention to these small yet significant details, you’ll create a sense of occasion, setting your Sunday roast apart from every other dinner. So go ahead, embrace the art of hosting, and watch as your guests’ faces light up when they see what awaits them.

Now all that’s left to do is embrace the cosiness of the indoors with a warm Sunday roast! Don’t forget to experiment with a palette of rich, seasonal colours and textures to complement the cosy atmosphere of your dining space. cosy winter living room

How to cosy up your living room this winter

There’s no denying that the living room is one of the most lived-in areas of a home, especially during the winter months when it needs to be ready for two things; hibernating and hosting. Whether you find yourself curling up on the sofa with a warm blanket, a favourite book, or in front of the flickering glow of the TV with friends and family, your living area should be gearing up for a busy season ahead. This means it’s time to work out how you to decorate your living room for winter!

So, to get you inspired, we’ve rounded up five tips to cosy up your living area – from the right lighting to use to the best accessories to style with. Keep reading and prepare to feel toasty.

Winter Living Room Product Grid Homemaker The Valley

Adairs Supersoft Checkerboard Washable Rug from $279.99, Adairs Willow Silver Green Hanging Fern $29.99, Eureka Furniture Cove Folding Screen $679, Eureka Furniture Sorghum Pot $89, Freedom Malvern Table Lamp $229, James Lane Bon Travertine & Acacia Coffee Table $1,299, Nick Scali Lenxy 6 Seat Corner Terminal Sofa POA, OZ Design Lazuli Canvas $799, Plush Elanor Swivel Armchair POA, Sheridan Outlet Caral Cushion $79.99, Sheridan Outlet Millbrook Faux Fur Throw $329.95.

Use Warm Colours

First up, consider the colour palette – we recommend choosing warm and inviting colours such as deep reds, earthy browns, or warm neutrals like beige and cream. These shades will make the space feel warmer than it actually is and help make your living area feel cosier. This is because warm hues are associated with passion, joy, and playfulness making them a good choice for rooms that see a lot of activity.

Incorporate Ambient Lighting

Set the mood with the correct lighting. During gloomy days when you need to get work done, then a natural glow or overhead white light can be energy-boosting and help you stay focused. When nighttime arrives and you’re wanting to relax, a warm light will help you unwind. We recommend using soft, warm lighting to create a cosy ambience in your living room. Opt for table lamps, floor lamps, or string lights with warm-toned bulbs rather than harsh overhead lighting that is more suitable in the daytime. You can also use candles to add a flickering, comforting glow.

Add Layers

The secret to a cosy living room? Layering! There’s nothing quite like sinking into a plush sofa with soft cushions and warm throws to snuggle up in. Be sure to opt for a mix of throws and cushions in chunky knit, faux fur, wool, and linen fabrics. The blend of textures will not only enhance the visual appeal of the space but also contribute to a delightfully snug environment, promising both style and comfort.

Decorate With Natural Elements

Since we’re bound to be spending more time inside during winter, why not bring the outdoors in as much as possible by using natural-inspired décor? Think driftwood, branches, stones, and botanicals. By incorporating these organic touches, you can create a serene atmosphere that reconnects you with the great outdoors.

Create Cosy Seating

Design your own reading nook within the living area for ultimate comfort and relaxation. Select a plush armchair, cosy cushions, and a soft ottoman for added comfort. Arrange the reading nook furniture thoughtfully to maximise the cosiness. We recommend having the chair face towards the warming glow of a fireplace or out the window. This arrangement invites you to sink in and escape into the pages of your favourite book. Watch us create a reading nook here.

Now that you know how to decorate your living room for winter, your living room is about to become the heart of your home this winter. Don’t forget to swing by Homemaker The Valley to gather all the essentials. Let’s make this winter your cosiest yet!

Sometimes, self-care simply means wrapping yourself up in a cosy robe, lighting a candle or two, and relaxing on the couch (or in bed) with a good book or binge-worthy show. If this sounds like heaven to your mum, then why not upgrade her self-care routine with a plush robe from Sheridan Outlet, and slippers from Adairs? Adairs also has a selection of home fragrances and candles that’ll make your mum’s home smell amazing.

Adairs Goldie Soft Sage Taper Candle $14.99, Adairs Sherpa Mule Slipper $24.99, DecoRug Karus Turquoise Designer Rug from $1,599, Freedom Dome Table Lamp $299, Freedom Ecology Ottawa Dinner Set $149, Freedom Urban Road Family Gathering Canvas $149, Howards Storage World Stackers Cable Organiser Bag $49.95, Howards Storage World Yamazaki Tower 4 Tier Jewellery Box $29.95, James Lane Apothecary The Scent Scented Candle $59.95, Kitchen Warehouse Smeg 50’s Retro Style Espresso Coffee Machine $369.95, OZ Design Santi Feather Fill Cushion $82.46.

For the entertaining mum

If your mum’s a bit of a social butterfly and you’re searching for Mother’s Day gifts she can share with her friends, then we recommend gifting her some sturdy glassware, platters, plates, or dinnerware she can use while entertaining guests. Provincial Home Living and Kitchen Warehouse’s vast collection of servingware will ensure every spread looks like a restaurant-ready masterpiece, while glassware and table décor from Freedom will make every table feel grand.

For the organised mum

Everyone loves an organised and functional space, especially if what you’re using to store your belongings is just as aesthetically pleasing as your furniture and décor. Howards Storage World has so many wonderful storage solutions that can help organise jewellery, cables, clothing and more. Their cable organiser bag can help hide pesky cords, and their four-tier jewellery box will be able to store all of Mum’s jewellery effectively. Mum’s space will look so good that she’ll never want to leave the house!

It can be difficult to find the perfect Mother’s Day gifts each year but with our curated list of luxurious home décor, self-care items, entertaining pieces, and organisational saviours, you’re guaranteed to bring a smile to her face. Happy Mother’s Day!
